Moona was born in a ‘maternity stall’ located in a separate section of the FACS Farm Dairy Barn. Moona is a Holstein, with black and white markings. It was a busy time for Farmer Tyler, since 80 other calves were born during the months of April and May. Moona began nursing within minutes. This is very important, since her mother’s milk ensured Moona had the right nutrients and could resist disease. She also began ‘mooing’ louder than many of the other calves, so Farmer Tyler called her Moona. Moona had a healthy appetite, drinking two litres of milk during her first six hours of life. After two days, Farmer Tyler began feeding Moona milk, along with fresh water, hay and a special feed mixture. Moona had her own ‘calf hutch’ with fresh clean straw. This ensured Moona had clean surroundings and got to know Farmer Tyler, as well as Chad and Emma, who regularly help with the evening chores. Tyler, Chad and Emma handled Moona gently, always remaining calm. This positive approach ensured Moona trusted the family, and, as she grew she was easy to handle, which is important since Moona is milked twice daily.
