Happy was born in a ‘foaling stall’ on a bed of fresh straw in the FACS barn on bright sunny April morning. Farmer Tyler and Farmer Brenda, and their two children, Chad and Emma, were so pleased to see the bay colt, with his white blaze and a black mane and tail, that they named him Happy.  He was up on his wobbly legs within 30 minutes, and soon began nursing. After a couple of days, Happy and his mother were out in the paddock. Chad and Happy became pals. Chad spent time with Happy every morning and evening, patting him and making sure both Happy and his mother had clean bedding. Within weeks, Chad introduced Happy to a halter. Chad spent time leading Happy around the paddock, picking up his feet and checking his legs, brushing him, always being gentle, talking to him and establishing trust. Happy and his mother were turned out in the pasture in June. Chad checked on him daily and Happy trotted over to the gate to welcome Chad.

Chad, with help from his father, introduced Happy to the saddle when he was two years old and gradually began riding him. By the time Happy was three years old, he was accustomed to all the sites and sounds of the FACS Farm. Happy and Chad have lots of responsibilities. They check the fences around the pasture. They make sure Hilda the Beefy Heifer and her friends are safe. They herd cattle together moving them to fresh greener pastures during the summer. When they are not working, they head out together for a pleasure ride.
